New PKD classification in 2025 – what do you need to know?

Starting from January 1, 2025, a new Polish Classification of Activities (PKD 2025) will replace the current PKD 2007. This update is crucial for businesses as PKD codes are essential for registering activities and complying with regulations related to various forms of business support.

Why are the changes being introduced?

PKD 2025 is the result of updates in the European Union’s Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE). The new classification reflects the economic changes of recent years, particularly in areas such as:

  • digital economy
  • circular economy
  • bio-economy

Additionally, descriptions of traditional industries have been refined, making it easier for businesses to match their activities with appropriate codes.

Key dates and transition period

The PKD update will apply to all public registers, including KRS, CEIDG, and REGON. Here are the key dates to keep in mind:

  • January 1, 2025 – PKD 2025 comes into effect. New codes will be required for all new entries and changes in public registers.
  • December 31, 2026 – End of the transition period. Until this date, both PKD 2007 and PKD 2025 may be used. Afterward, all activities will be automatically reclassified to PKD 2025.

Businesses operating before 2025 will have two years to update their PKD codes. Any changes submitted to CEIDG after January 1, 2025, will require compliance with PKD 2025.

What changes does PKD 2025 bring?

The new classification introduces several significant updates:

  • inclusion of new types of activities that have emerged due to economic developments,
  • improved precision of traditional industry descriptions, making it easier to assign proper codes,
  • better harmonization of economic statistics at the EU level.

PKD codes play a critical role in the economy, enabling the analysis of the national economic structure, conducting statistical research, and determining support mechanisms for businesses. The new classification will provide a more accurate and relevant representation of economic activities.

What should businesses do?

To ensure compliance with the new classification, businesses should take the following steps:

  1. Verify your PKD codes – Check if your current activity scope aligns with PKD 2025.
  1. Update your entries in public registers – Any changes after January 1, 2025, must follow the PKD 2025 framework.
  1. Familiarize yourself with the regulations – Detailed information is available in the Council of Ministers Regulation dated December 27, 2024.

Additionally, efficient Human Resources and Payroll services can support your administrative processes, ensuring compliance and accuracy during this transition.

The introduction of PKD 2025 is a step toward aligning Poland’s economy with modern European standards. Businesses have until the end of 2026 to adapt their activities to the new requirements, but it’s wise to address this earlier to avoid complications and take full advantage of the new classification.
